A jet streak is a localized maximum of wind speed within the broader jet stream, a compact core of faster air that drives regions of divergence aloft and upward motion beneath. NWS Louisville defines it as the portion of the jet stream where winds along the core are notably stronger than in surrounding sections.
The four-quadrant picture
As air enters a jet streak it accelerates, and as it exits it decelerates. The classical idealization divides the streak into four quadrants around its core. In a straight streak, the right entrance and left exit regions sit under upper-level divergence, while the left entrance and right exit sit under convergence.
Divergence aloft evacuates mass from the column, lowers surface pressure, and forces the air below to rise to replace it. That is why surface cyclones and their associated precipitation tend to organize under the right entrance and left exit of an approaching streak.
How forecasters use it
Locating the streak on a 300 or 250 mb chart is a first step in identifying where synoptic ascent will focus. Overlaid on a moist warm sector, the right entrance of a streak often marks a corridor where the cap erodes first and initial convection blossoms.
The interaction of two streaks is a common ingredient in significant severe weather and heavy snow. When a southern-stream streak and a northern-stream streak phase, their circulations can align and produce a much stronger lift signal than either would alone.
Where the model can mislead
NWS Louisville cautions that the transverse circulation cartoon in the four-quadrant model is idealized. In real cases the largest ascent often shifts south and east of the upper divergence maximum, where isentropic lift over a warm frontal surface takes over. Reading the streak alongside low-level moisture transport is essential.
Curved jets behave differently from straight ones. In an anticyclonically curved flow, the divergence pattern shifts. Treating any streak as a plug-and-play template misses these details, so forecasters use it as one of several diagnostics rather than a standalone tool.
