The SPC Convective Outlook is a suite of forecast products from NOAA's Storm Prediction Center that describes where severe thunderstorms are expected across the contiguous United States over the next one to eight days. It is the single most-referenced severe weather forecast in the country and sets the baseline expectation for a chase or operations day.
What the outlook contains
Each outlook cycle includes a categorical map, hazard-specific probabilistic maps for tornado, hail, and wind, and a detailed text discussion explaining the forecaster's reasoning. Day 1 outlooks are updated multiple times per day as the setup evolves. Days 2 and 3 are updated less frequently, and the Day 4 through 8 outlook is issued once daily to describe the broader pattern.
Day 1 provides separate probabilistic maps for each hazard because forecasters can differentiate tornado risk from hail and wind risk at short range. Day 2 and Day 3 combine all three into a single total probability, reflecting the increased uncertainty at longer lead times.
How forecasters and chasers use it
Local NWS offices treat the SPC outlook as a starting point for their own messaging and staffing decisions. Emergency managers use it to preposition resources. Chasers use it to identify which state or region to target the day before, then refine within that target using surface analyses, model runs, and mesoanalysis as the event approaches.
The value of the outlook comes from consistency. SPC forecasters follow standardized probability-to-category conversions, so a Slight Risk means something comparable from event to event, even if two Slight Risk days look very different on radar.
What the outlook is not
An outlook is not a nowcast. A Moderate Risk does not mean a specific town will be hit. It means that within the outlined area, the probability of severe weather reaches a defined threshold. Some points inside the risk area will see nothing. Some points just outside will still see storms.
The outlook also does not commit to storm mode or timing at high precision. Those details refine through mesoscale discussions and eventual watches as the day evolves.
